'A Nightmare on Elm Street' Turns 30: Watch 5 Things You Didn't Know About the Bloody Classic

A Nightmare on Elm Street turns 30-years old this fall, and still holds the distinction of being one of the bloodiest fright fests of all time.

Director Wes Craven’s classic,
about a terrifying, knife-glove-wielding killer who stalks teenagers in
their sleep, introduced the world to the night terrors of Freddy Krueger
and the boyish charm of Johnny Depp. The movie required over 500
gallons of fake blood during its production, which makes sense when you
consider the brutality and body count depicted on screen. In the video
above, Yahoo Movies’ takes you inside the making of your worst (or is it
best?) Nightmare, including the pizza slice that inspired
Freddy’s look, the movie’s alternate happy ending, and the elaborate
spinning room that was built in order to kill off Depp in spectacular
fashion for his big screen debut.

By the way, you have Craven’s
daughter to thank for Depp’s participation. The director was uncertain
that the actor was right for the part, but she promised him what we were
all soon to learn: that girls would go crazy for Depp.
